About the Program

The Social Explorers program is a 10-week after-school initiative designed to help children build essential social and cooperative skills in a fun, dynamic setting. A collaboration between Northern Outreach and Clinical Services and Science North, this program blends Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with exciting hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities. Children will work on skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and peer interaction while exploring the world of STEM in a supportive environment. This program is ideal for children who may need extra support in social skill development and thrive in hands-on, interactive settings. The program is overseen by a Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA), ensuring that each child’s learning is guided by evidence-based practices tailored to their individual needs.

Program focus areas

Children will have the opportunity to build and practice these essential social skills:

  • Conversational Skills: How to start and maintain meaningful, respectful conversations.

  • Negotiation Skills: Learning how to collaborate and find solutions that work for everyone.

  • Perspective-Taking: Understanding and appreciating different viewpoints.

  • Teamwork: Working together to complete tasks and build friendships.

  • Problem-Solving: Collaborating with peers to tackle challenges and accomplish goals.

These skills will be practiced alongside exciting STEM activities, allowing children to apply their learning in real-world scenarios while exploring science, technology, engineering, and math in creative ways.

Why choose Social Explorers?

  • Build Social Skills Through Play: The program offers a natural setting for children to develop important social skills by interacting with peers.

  • Fun and Engaging: Hands-on STEM activities allow children to explore science and technology while building social skills in a dynamic, interactive way.

  • Small Group Setting: With a 4:1 facilitator-to-child ratio, children receive personalized attention and support to build confidence.

  • Evidence-Based Approach: The program is overseen by a Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA), ensuring that the interventions are based on proven strategies for social skill development.

  • Real-World Practice: Children practice social skills in real-life situations, helping them build the confidence to apply them outside the program.
